My friend Karen mailed me this wonderful poem by William Blake:

“Love seeketh not itself to please,
Nor for itself hath any care,
But for another gives its ease,
And builds a heaven in hell’s despair.”

So sung a little Clod of Clay,
Trodden with the cattle’s feet,
But a Pebble of the brook
Warbled out these metres meet:

“Love seeketh only self to please,
To bind another to its delight,
Joys in another’s loss of ease,
And builds a Hell in Heaven’s despite.”

My friend Mooj produces a wonderful radio show titled Oraltale.

What is it about leftovers that’s tremendously satisfying? The moments in
life when you’re honestly grateful for scraps. Oraltale is leftover stories.

Have a listen:

That is the kind of nonsense that comes out of my mouth when I’m drunk, which is one reason why I drink as infrequently as I do.

Last Train Home(2009)

We all hear about how bad conditions are for factory workers in China, but instead of making a film that examined the injustice of the industry as a whole, director Lixin Fan managed to make a similarly effective film by simply focusing on one family’s financial struggle. Last Train Home is a beautifully shot and honest film that shows the repercussions of the sacrifices that one rural Chinese family is forced to make so that they can survive off of what most people in this country would consider chump-change.

I think that this is my favorite album that was released this year.

(Edit: no, it’s not.)

It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve listened to this album since I was sixteen, it’s still one of the best that I’ve ever heard. Ibi Dreams of Pavement and Major Label Debut (the fast version, which is actually on EP To Be You and Me) are my favorite tracks,

“Phyllis Siegel, 76, left, and Connie Kopelov, 84, both of New York, embrace after becoming the first same-sex couple to get married at the Manhattan City Clerk’s office.”

This is beautiful.

It’s 5:20 in the morning and I’m awake because one of my roommates is currently entertaining a large and loud group of her friends by playing music in the living room, which is located right outside of my bedroom. It’s this kind of shit … fuck.

On the bright side, someone just put on Le Tigre.
